KEY ISSUES

STRONG families ... STRONG communities ... a  STRONGER South Dakota!

On The 2nd Amendment

Sue is a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment rights and has successfully passed legislation protecting those rights, including banning local governments from enacting gun control laws and standardizing the concealed carry permit process, She supported successful efforts to pass constitutional carry legislation, remove concealed carry permit fees, and preserve gun rights. Sue is a lifetime member of the NRA, and has earned an A+ legislative rating.

On Life

Sue believes that life is precious and that abortion ends a human life. She has worked to protect innocent life in the State Legislature and has consistently received a 100% rating from South Dakota Right to Life.

On Taxes

The People, not the Government, know best how to spend their money. When the Government takes in more tax revenues than it needs it should be returned to the people. With record-setting budget surpluses the past few years, Sue has supported numerous tax cuts including eliminating the sales tax on food, reducing skyrocketing property taxes, and the historic sales tax cut passed during the 2023 session.

On Crime

Sioux Falls has seen exponential growth over the past few years but we don’t have to accept the rising crime has come with it. Sue believes that South Dakota can be a high growth, low crime state. In the 2023 legislative session Sue worked with a coalition of Mayors, Sherriff's, States Attorneys, and Police Chiefs to pass legislation limiting parole for violent criminals.  This legislation prevents violent offenders from being allowed to reoffend and create more victims, thus keeping our communities safer.

On Veterans

Because of her leadership on Veterans Issues, Sue was named the Veterans Legislator of the Year by the South Dakota Veterans Council in 2019. Sue’s work on the Appropriations Committee was instrumental in securing the passage and funding for the east side Veterans Cemetery, along with Veterans tuition credit at our technical colleges.

On Education

As an outspoken advocate for our children and their education, Sue Peterson has been the prime sponsor of several landmark education bills including the Campus Free Speech and Intellectual Diversity Act, and the Opportunity Scholarship Fairness Act. Sue is a well known parental rights advocate, and has consistently supported increased pay for K-12 teachers without raising taxes.
